Sewage contamination at Wellington beach

Swimmers were being urged to stay away from Owhiro Bay waters with pollution-warning signs being erected by Wellington City Council this afternoon, following the detection of possible sewage contamination.

The presence of enterococci - an indicator of microbiological pollution, including sewage - was found during water-quality monitoring over the past two days. The level was likely to cause a health hazard.

Groundwater contamination is deeper -- and increasing -- in Pompton Lakes

Groundwater contamination beneath a Pompton Lakes neighborhood remains high — and is even increasing in some areas — more than 20 years after the pollution was discovered, according to a new report filed with the federal government.

The worst of the groundwater pollution is at the intermediate and deep soil levels, where the highest contamination is 260 times the state safety threshold. The most polluted areas are near the intersection of Barbara Drive and Schuyler Avenue, as well as Lake Avenue at Park Place, according to the report DuPont filed with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Feds will test wells to trace contamination sources

TOPPENISH -- Federal clean-water regulators will begin next week seeking permission from a number of well owners in Yakima County to test their water for contamination with the aim of identifying the sources of the problem and ultimately fixing it.

"We know there's a problem. We're beyond that," Mike Cox, risk assessment supervisor at the Environmental Protection Agency's Seattle office, told a group of about 50 stakeholders at an information session held at the offices of the Yakama Nation.

More than 12 percent of wells in the Lower Yakima Valley have tested above the maximum contaminant level of nitrates.
