SAN DIEGO: Five communities told to boil water By North County Times | Monday, March 23, 2009 4:20 PM PDT SAN DIEGO ---- A "boil water" notice affecting northwestern San Diego will be in effect for up to 72 hours following a water main break at Torrey Pines State Park, officials said Monday. Residents and restaurants of Torrey Pines, Torrey Hills, Del Mar Mesa, Carmel Valley and Pacific Highlands Ranch have been advised to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking. The recommendation follows a major pipeline breach Sunday night at Torrey Pines State Park, they said. The San Diego city water department had not yet determined what caused the break. Officials have described boiling as a "precaution" and did not report any dangerous contamination. The city water department will conduct tests to make sure the water is safe to be used without boiling, they said.
