Many times, the marketers of these kits claim that they test for broad ranges of contaminants (e.g. “pesticides”) but it turns out that they only test for one chemical in that group.

If they have a pesticide show up, you will then need to purchase a laboratory analysis to discover what it means. If their results do not show a contaminant it may actually be present, but at a concentration too low for their inferior processes to show. Worse, such kits generally only test for a small number of chemicals that are not necessarily the most important ones in ground water.  Those kit-style litmus tests do not use methods approved by the EPA or any other health authority.
